The Los Angeles Times Daily Crossword is one of the most-played newspaper crosswords in America. It runs seven days a week, free on the LA Times website and syndicated to more than 100 papers worldwide.
The Monday through Saturday puzzles are 15×15 grids that follow the classic increasing-difficulty arc: Monday is the easiest, Saturday is the toughest themeless. Sunday is a larger 21×21 themed puzzle.
The LA Times Crossword has been edited by Patti Varol since 2022, when she took over from Rich Norris (who held the seat for 23 years). Constructors include both veteran professionals and newer voices — the puzzle is known for a friendly, accessible vibe with sparkling fill.
💡 Tips for Solving
1. Start with the fill-in-the-blanks.
Clues with a literal blank (___ as in “___ Vegas”) are usually the easiest. They give you confident letters that constrain the crossing answers.
2. Watch for clue tense and number.
A plural clue gets a plural answer (and usually ends in S). A past-tense clue (“Walked”) gets a past-tense answer (STRODE, AMBLED).
3. Use crossings.
If you’re stuck on a long across answer, jump to the down clues that cross it. A few confident letters and the long word fills itself in.
4. Mind the day of the week.
Mondays use everyday vocabulary and straightforward wordplay. Friday and Saturday push into harder clueing — expect puns, misdirection, and abbreviated answers.
